I Found a Black Widow in My Wesley Chapel Home. Now What?

You found it. The red hourglass is right there on the underside of the abdomen. Shiny black body, messy web low to the ground in the corner of the garage. There is no question about what it is. Now you are standing there trying to figure out what to do next and whether you need to be worried about more of them somewhere in the house.

The answer to that last question is probably yes and here is why.

Black Widows Are Not Usually Alone

Finding one black widow in your Wesley Chapel home almost never means there is just one. Black widows are solitary spiders but they thrive in the same conditions and once those conditions exist in your garage or storage areas multiple spiders will establish themselves in different spots throughout that space over time. If you found one under a workbench there is a reasonable chance there are others behind boxes, under shelving, near the water heater or anywhere else that is dark undisturbed and close to the ground.

The population does not build overnight. It develops slowly in spaces that do not get regular attention. Most homeowners in Wesley Chapel find their first black widow and then start looking around and find signs of others they never noticed before.

Where to Check in Your Home

After finding a black widow the first thing to do before touching anything is look carefully at the surrounding area without reaching your hands into any spaces you cannot see clearly. Black widows hide during the day and sit in their web at night. During the day they tuck into the darkest most sheltered part of the web space which is usually a crack, gap or folded piece of material.

Check the following areas carefully and methodically. Under and behind anything stored on the garage floor including boxes, equipment, furniture and firewood. Inside any cardboard boxes that have been sitting on the floor for an extended period. Under outdoor furniture that is stored in the garage. Around the base of the water heater and any utility equipment near the floor. Inside any stored clothing, shoes or gloves that have been in the garage for a while and have not been worn recently.

That last one is important. Black widow bites most commonly happen when someone reaches into a shoe or puts on a glove without checking first. Shake out anything that has been stored in the garage before putting it on.

Is Your Family in Immediate Danger

If you found the spider in the garage and nobody has been bitten the situation is serious but not an emergency. Black widows are not aggressive. They do not chase people. They bite when they feel trapped which is almost always when someone accidentally reaches into or puts pressure on the space where the spider is hiding.

The people most at risk are small children who play in the garage and might reach into corners or under shelving without understanding the risk, and elderly people whose systems are more vulnerable to the venom. If anyone in your home has been bitten by a spider recently and experienced severe muscle cramping, pain that spread beyond the bite site, nausea or difficulty breathing, seek medical attention immediately and mention the possibility of a black widow bite.

Why You Should Not Try to Handle This Yourself

A can of spider spray will kill the spiders it directly contacts. It will not find the ones you did not see. It will not treat the insect activity that is drawing black widows into the space in the first place and it will not give you any confidence that you found all of them.

Black widow removal in a space with clutter, stored items and limited visibility requires a systematic inspection by someone who knows exactly where to look. We inspect every likely hiding spot, treat the areas where spiders are active with professional grade products, knock down all existing webs and egg sacs and address the underlying insect activity that made the garage attractive to spiders in the first place. Our spider control program covers the full assessment and treatment so you know the problem has actually been addressed not just partially knocked back.
